Thunderbird Ranks in Top Five Globally for Online MBA

January 23, 2014

Thunderbird School of Global Management’s Global MBA Online earned the number four spot in the 2014 QS Distance Online MBA Ranking released today. Thunderbird was one of only three U.S. business schools to rank in the top ten of this global ranking.

“We are proud of the high quality our Global MBA Online delivers and of this recognition,” said Rebecca Henriksen, Vice President of Enrollment and Student Services Management for Thunderbird. “This program allows working professionals to experience a world-class business school education from the convenience of any location. It blends web-based coursework with onsite seminars around the globe and allows multiple opportunities for students to meet with their classmates in person.”

Henriksen said the quality of students in the program also contributes to its success. On average, the students have nine years of work experience and are living and working all over the world. “We find that our Global MBA Online graduates are high-level executives who bring a wealth of experience to the classroom,” she said. “Then the students are able take the knowledge they gain in the program, from both their courses and their peers, and apply it right away in real-world settings.”

The QS Distance Online MBA Ranking is based on 18 indicators, including employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, percentage of full-time faculty, completion rate, physical meet-up opportunities and diversity of nationalities.

Rounding out the top five schools in the ranking are: (1) IE Business School, (2) Warwick Business School, (3) Indiana University Kelley School of Business and (5) Manchester Business School.

The latest QS Applicant Survey Research shows that the proportion of prospective MBA applicants interested in online and/or distance learning programs stood at 23.5% in 2013, up from just 4.4% in 2008.

“The increasing sophistication and variety of online and distance learning options means a growing number of candidates are now pursuing the opportunity to gain a world-class business education without the need to relocate or take a career break,” said Nunzio Quacquarelli, managing director of QS.

“This ranking offers candidates a level of assurance about the relative quality of these programs that has been unavailable in the past,” Quacquarelli continued. “This year’s results show that employers are increasingly considering candidates from the top online and distance programs as part of their recruitment strategies.”
